TSC allocated Sh13 billion for the permanent recruitment of interns teachers.
The National Treasury gave their employer Sh13.4 billion to convert the contracts of 46,000 contract public school teachers to permanent ones, so they can now grin.
The budget has been increased from the Sh8.3 billion that the Budget Appropriations Committee had previously suggested, which was intended to support 26,000 tutors.
The workers, who were primarily sent to junior schools as part of the contentious “internship” program, had sued the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) over the issue.
The largest amount (Sh358.2 billion) from the 2024–2025 budget that was submitted to the National Assembly went to TSC. As it has for many years, education accounted for the largest portion of the budget, at Sh656.6 billion, or 27.6%.
A budget of Sh142.3 billion has been assigned to the State Department of Basic Education. Free Junior Secondary School (Sh30.7 billion), Free Day Secondary Education (Sh61.9 billion), Free Primary Education (Sh9.1 billion), and National Examinations Fee Waiver (Sh5 billion) are among of its programs. A learner in FPE receives Sh1,420, but students in JSS receive Sh15,042.
The allotment for a student at FPE is Sh22,244. Less money does, however, make it to the schools each year.
Due to the frequent delays in payments, the institutions end up with enormous obligations from suppliers. Teachers unions, the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association, and the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association have all previously demanded prompt and greater financing.
Additionally, Sh1.3 billion will be used to train educators in competency-based curricula, while Sh360 million will go toward the Secondary ICT Integration and Digital Literacy Program.
A total of Sh3.2 billion has been allocated for the improvement of primary and secondary school infrastructure, and an additional Sh1 billion will be used to build junior school classrooms in preparation for the introduction of Grade 9 in January 2025.
By the end of the year, the ministry intends to install between 16,000 and 18,000 classrooms, according to Ezekiel Machogu, cabinet secretary for education.
