TSC begins to send letters of termination to JSS intern teachers.
Intern teachers at junior secondary schools who have been demonstrating for permanent employment terms for the previous few weeks have allegedly received termination letters from their company.
According to letters that The Star has received, the Teachers Service Commission reportedly mailed the interns on June 6th, stating that their employment had been terminated “on grounds of professional misconduct.”
“In view of the above, the Commission has decided to terminate your Internship engagement with effect from June 6, 2024, on the grounds that you engaged in acts of professional misconduct in that you deserted duty with effect from May 13, 2024, to date while engaged as an Intern teacher,” the letter of termination stated.
As of the time of going to press, TSC had not reacted to our attempts to contact them by phone or text on the purported letters of termination.
TSC said that on May 22, it had sent the interns show-cause letters for skipping class due to their protests.
TSC requested a response from the interns on the topic within 14 days, failing which the planned action would be finally implemented.
“Reference is made to the show cause letter 22 May 2024 in which you were accorded an opportunity to explain the reasons why your engagement as an intern should not be terminated on account of professional misconduct,” stated TSC.
“The Commission has carefully considered your response and found me same to be unsatisfactory.”
The material has even been shared with other instructors in the staffroom, according to a permanent teacher working in Nairobi who asked to remain anonymous.
“Two of our interns who were actively taking part in the protests have received the termination letters,” he stated.
