TSC Cancels P1 Course and Announces Significant Reforms to the Teaching Profession.
The Primary Teachers Certificate Training Course, or P1, has been discontinued as part of the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) ongoing efforts to significantly restructure Kenya’s teaching workforce.
Stakeholders’ responses to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia’s announcement of the decision, which was made as part of the continuing review of the legislation governing the teaching profession, were mixed.
Macharia emphasized the cooperative endeavor to address registration requirements with deans of universities providing teacher education.
Consolidating the education system and addressing teacher problems are the goals of the reform.
Apart from discontinuing the P1 course, TSC implemented other policies aimed at streamlining the teaching industry.
The proposed revisions target transgressions including sexual misbehavior and clarify the conditions that lead to disciplinary action or instructor deregistration.
The formation and promotion of teachers’ ongoing professional development is another priority for TSC.
TSC is moving forward with its changes, guided by constitutional laws and proposals from the presidential working party on education reforms, despite criticism from some parties regarding apparent overreach.
TSC plans to promote more than 30,000 teachers to senior teachers and chief principals, among other cadres, which is a good development for educators.
A budget of Ksh1 billion has been set up for promotions in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, as part of continuous attempts to end stagnation in the teaching profession.
In response to worries regarding the quality of medical treatment provided to educators under the teachers’ medical plan, Macharia promised better healthcare. TSC is dedicated to improving the provision of healthcare services to educators nationwide.
The reform package includes several significant proposed revisions, one of which is the establishment of a diploma-level entry requirement for teacher training.
Aspiring teachers are advised by TSC to have a minimum grade of C plain, with a minimum of a D+ in math and a C-minus in English.
The TSC seeks to establish a more effective and professional environment as the teaching profession experiences profound changes, making sure educators are given the support and respect they deserve for playing a critical role in determining the future of the country.
