TSC certifies that intern teachers will be hired on a permanent, pensionable basis.
With confirmation from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) that they will be permanently absorbed and eligible for pensions, intern teachers who were employed in 2022 can finally exhale with ease.
To facilitate the hiring process under the new terms, TSC Director of Staffing Joseph Mugele asked in a memo dated January 11, 2023, that the interns not be taken off the payroll.
“The interviews for the exercise commence on Friday, January 13 and recruitment documents are scheduled for February 6,” the memo begins in part.
To address the teacher shortage in the nation, the commission had already promised 25,550 slots for interns and 10,000 places for instructors hired on permanent pensionable terms.
“TSC invites applications from qualified candidates to fill the vacancies to support the implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC),” the statement reads in part.
Nine thousand of the posts open to teachers on pensionable conditions were designated for permanent secondary school teachers, and the remaining 1,000 slots were designated for primary school instructors.
Similarly, of the posts designated for interns, 21,550 are designated for junior high school intern instructors, while the remaining 4,000 are designated for interns from primary schools.
The positions that were made public were in line with President William Ruto’s order to hire 30,000 educators for the 2023–2024 school year.
“The Ministry of Education, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and the TSC will work on modalities of fast-tracking retooling teachers to ensure the country has sufficient numbers who are compliant with CBC,” the statement released by the president said in the second section.
