TSC Changes P1 Employment Plan Following Transfer To Scrap Certificates.
Following the introduction of a proposal to revoke P1 teachers’ certifications as specified by the TSC Amendment Bill, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has now provided an explanation regarding the destiny of these certificate holders.
In order to require instructors in the lowest employment cadre to hold at least a diploma, the panel had previously suggested doing away with the certificates.
Before, a person who received a D plain was eligible to apply for a P1 teaching certificate.
The commission aims to increase the minimum entrance requirement for the profession from a D grade to a C plain under the current plan.
The commission also stated that P1 teachers still have the option of working in classrooms, given that they go through a retooling process.
In order to be competent to teach in first grade, P1 teachers must also get a diploma certificate at the very least.
Senators expressed worry about this idea, stating that the high college tuition costs may discourage some teachers from pursuing the mandatory diploma program.
They also mentioned the difficulties posed by increasingly stringent practicum requirements and the costs related to the Kenya National Examinations Council’s (KNEC) examination.
TSC claims that since the introduction of the new curriculum, the P1 teachers’ retooling has become required, necessitating their training in the new pedagogical abilities.
This will allow them to distribute knowledge to students in accordance with the commission’s recommendations and execute the new curriculum successfully.
Consequently, TSC has stated that it will implement a comprehensive and well-defined program for P1 instructors working for the Commission to receive retooling.
The emphasis of the retooling will be on the new pedagogical abilities that will allow the teachers to efficiently impart knowledge to students.
The commission has also stated that, in order to upgrade their P1 Certificates to a Diploma level, all P1 instructors who graduated before 2019 and are not on the commission’s payroll began a nine-month upgrading program back in 2019.
TSC clarified the situation by saying that the Commission is now making sure that there is no prejudice and that inclusion is maintained.
TSC has therefore guaranteed that it will keep hiring teachers with P1 certificates who haven’t pursued the criteria to advance to a diploma.
To enable them to successfully implement CBC, the commission stated that after these P1 teachers are hired, they will go through a thorough retooling program.
Additionally, TSC declared that it will provide equal employment opportunities for teachers who upgrade to the Diploma level and those who presently possess P1 credentials.
