The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has hired 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms
Education CS Migos Ogambo announced plans to hire an additional 20,000 JSS teachers to improve staffing and education quality
The recruitment aims to address staffing gaps and support the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Migos Ogambo, has confirmed that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has hired 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
The contract nature of the JSS teachers has been a subject of judicial and civil action processes following their initial recruitment as interns on a one-year contract by the TSC.
The JSS teachers had earlier participated in a strike demanding absorption by TSC on permanent and pensionable term
Recruitment of the JSS teachers was necessary to ensure the effective implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and address staffing gaps in junior secondary schools nationwide.
According to a report published on MyGov on November 26, CS Ogambo emphasised that the hiring was in line with the government promises made to the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
Speaking at the official opening of Grade 9 classrooms at Ober Boys Boarding Comprehensive School in Rachuonyo Sub-County, Homa Bay County, CS Ogambo said that the government will hire an additional 20,000 teachers to ensure sufficient staffing for JSS and improve education quality.
“We are also working to recruit an additional 20,000 JSS teachers to ensure adequate staffing so that every student receives the attention they deserve,” said Ogambo.
The recruitment comes at a time when the government is focused on addressing challenges in the CBC framework including classroom construction, provision of learning materials, and stakeholder engagement to resolve emerging issues.
The CS further reassured stakeholders that the government remains committed to supporting the growth of JSS, with plans to build 10,000 additional classrooms by next year to accommodate the increasing student population.
JSS interns currently receive a monthly stipend of KSh 20,000, reduced to KSh 17,000 after statutory deductions. JSS intern teachers will have higher salaries and get various allowances as well as health insurance coverage.
