TSC Ends the Training Program for Primary Teachers Certificate.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has ended the Primary Teachers Certificate Training Course, also referred to as P1, as part of an ongoing reform of the legislation governing Kenya’s teaching profession.
The diploma level now serves as the starting point for teacher training admissions, and one of the proposed regulations establishes those requirements.
TSC advises that an educator obtain a minimum of a C plain overall, with a minimum of D+ in Mathematics and a C minus in English, in accordance with the previously issued recommendations.
“We called a caucus of all deans of universities that offer teaching education last week to address the registration criteria. Nancy Macharia, CEO of TSC, stated, “We want to address Parliament when the education sector unites.”
In an effort to raise the standard of professionalism in the industry, the TSC has also suggested a variety of steps, including deregistration procedures and disciplinary actions, particularly with regard to sexual misbehavior and other related violations.
The group also wishes to establish and codify continuous professional development for teachers.
The changes are being made while a large number of teachers are up for promotions.
TSC will elevate over 30,000 educators, from senior instructors to top principals.
“We have been granted Ksh1 billion for promotions in the fiscal year 24/45, and we are currently in the process of promoting 36 teachers in this fiscal year.” In the fiscal year 2023–2024, we promoted 14,000 teachers. “The issue of teachers’ stagnation will be resolved fairly soon,” she emphasized.
A number of the proposed legal modifications have drawn harsh criticism from stakeholders who claim TSC is going too far and giving itself powers it does not have.
The TSC claims that the mandates of the constitution and the recommendations made by the presidential working party for education reforms are what are driving the reforms in this area.
