TSC Finally Announces Confirmation Of Intern Teachers.
Verification Of PnP Intern Teachers. 26, 000 intern teachers in primary and junior secondary schools (JSS) would be hired on a permanent and pensionable basis at an expense of KSh8.3 billion. They will have reason to celebrate when this begins in January 2025.
The National Treasury has allocated KSh364. 910 billion to the Teachers Service Commission to carry out its mandate for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.
The approved 2024 Budget Policy Statement shows the Commission’s allocation of KSh369.9 billion, despite the draft budget projections for Financial Year 2024/25 having an allocation of KSh364.910 billion.
This demonstrates a KSh33 million drop in development expenses and a KSh5.033 billion decrease in ongoing expenses.
This is taking place amidst the JSS intern teachers’ continuous protests, as they have declined to go back to their classrooms this week, even as the second term of classes begins.

Teachers want the TSC to heed the Employment and Labour Relations Court’s (ELRC) decision, which concluded that their employment as interns, rather than on a contract with pension benefits, violated their right to a fair and permanent job.
JSS teachers are currently hired for a one-year term; those working in JSS receive KSh20,000, while those assigned to primary schools receive KSh15,000.
TSC has allocated KSh4.68 billion to hire an extra 20,000 interns for elementary and JSS schools in an attempt to address the teaching shortage in these establishments. TSC revealed that it plans to invest KSh1 billion in teacher advancements as a result.
The amount is similar to what was recently spent when the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) were followed by the Commission to promote 36, 505 teachers to higher grades. Most of these teachers were promoted to new ranks after years of inactivity in the same industry.
