TSC Hardship Regions And Allowances .Teachers working under the Teachers service commission are paid salaries on a monthly basis. On top of salaries, they earn allowances, where there is a special one known as hardship allowance.

However, not all teachers enjoy this type of allowance. It is paid to teachers working in hard to staff areas. Additionally, the payment rates vary depending on the job group and years of work.

The teachers who get paid hardship allowance deserve the allowance. This is because they work in areas perceived as difficult areas. Therefore the stipend cushions them to try to survive in those harsh and costly environments.

Teachers working in hardship areas normally encounter a myriad of challenges. Among the difficulties they encounter are ;

• Insufficient water
• Seasoned flooding
• Hostile living conditions
• Frequent attacks from bandits

The TSC hardship allowance varies across all teachers. Additionally, teachers who got employed earlier receive a higher hardship allowance as compared to the newly employed ones. This is because those who got employed early are in a higher job group as compared to the newly employed ones.

In the recent past, the government has put more efforts in amending the infrastructure in the country. There has been an influx in availability of social amenities all over. Nevertheless,  some regions have had to be scrapped off from the list of hardship areas.

In 2014, the salaries and remuneration commission conducted a survey and proposed a uniform hardship allowance for all teachers. However, this decision was later quashed by TSC.

Based on the latest review, the highest paid teachers pockets a monthly hardship allowance of 38,100 shillings. In addition, these are instructors holding administrative positions, especially chief principals in job group D5.

As per TSC, areas perceived to be hardship are areas vulnerable to;

• Starvation
• Aridity
• Terrorism among others
