The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has evaluated the kinds of disabilities that qualify for allowance payments to public sector employees, including teachers and TSC staff, according to a communication dated June 11, 2024, signed by TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia.
As to the letter, SRC examined the various categories of disability in a circular that was issued on March 7, 2024, with reference to SRC/ADM/11(190).
Disabilities such as low eyesight requiring magnifiers, blindness, and deafness are eligible for allowances. Teachers who have severe visual impairment, defined as having a visual acuity of 6/60 or less, can receive allowances based on a report from an ophthalmologist.
The use of wheelchairs, crutches, walking frames, and any other walking device requiring two hands is considered an additional qualifying disability.
A personal allowance of Ksh20,000 per month has been provided by SRC to public servants with disabilities, including teachers.
This allowance is included in the monthly salary and is valid as of February 14, 2024. Teachers who would like to apply for this stipend should adhere to the Remuneration Act of 2015 criteria.
