TSC is Leading New Initiative to Revise Minimum Entry Requirements for Teachers.
A proposal by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) states that the minimum admission criteria for individuals wishing to become teachers will no longer be the P1 Certificate Level of education for trainees.
In accordance with the most recent plan, TSC intends to make a Diploma Certificate the required educational background for all teachers, including those pursuing ECDE certification training.
The Commission mandates that all new hires obtain at least a C and a D plain in mathematics.
Additionally, TSC seeks to ensure that all teachers get at least a C- in English.
The TSC said that while it supports the decision, the measure is meant to improve candidates’ performance in the national exams.
“If you do an analysis of KCSE results, Mathematics and Languages are the worst subject performance in the Republic of Kenya at KCPE or KCSE,” states Cavin Anyour, the Director of Law TSC.
The chair of the Commission, Nancy Macharia, stated unequivocally that TSC is now debating with the Ministry of Education over the fate of teachers who are getting training but are unable to meet the freshly set requirements.
“We are consulting with the Ministry regarding the teachers who are currently in colleges, and it’s possible that they don’t have the necessary requisite qualifications,” stated Nancy Macharia. I am confident that we will find a solution in the end, so that shouldn’t be an issue.
In addition to changing the qualifying requirements, the committee recommended harsher sanctions for teachers.
According to the commission, these modifications will promote professionalism in the industry and attract more people to it.
One of the proposed modifications is the deregistration of instructors who engage in serious offenses, like having extramarital affairs.
In addition, the commission promised to promote 36,505 teachers by the end of 2024, considering that the government had allocated Ksh1 billion for the same goal in the fiscal year 2024–2025.
Others, on the other hand, have attacked the Commission for some of the proposed changes, claiming that it lacks the jurisdiction to put them into effect.
