TSC is Recruiting 26,000 Intern Teachers on a Permanent Term.
The Teachers Service Commission was given funding to hire the tutors on a permanent and pensionable basis, which could put an end to the Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers’ strike that had threatened to shut down school.
The National Assembly Committee on Education, which is chaired by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, conveyed this information.
Melly announced that funds had been allocated to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to convert 26,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms. Melly was leading his team’s submission of budget estimates for the 2024–25 fiscal year and the supplemental II budget for the 2023–24 fiscal year.
The budget and appropriations committee, chaired by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, accepted the submissions.
In order to guarantee that the striking teachers are provided permanent employment, it was approved that TSC get Ksh8.3 billion.
To hire 20,000 intern teachers, TSC would also get Ksh4.7 billion. Melly urged for greater resource allocation, pointing out that the entire effort resulted in a Ksh14.6 billion shortfall.
According to a National Assembly report, “Melly further recommended that the TSC convert the 26,000 interns into permanent employment beginning July 2024, rather than January 2025 as proposed.”
The fact that the funds had been made available for promotions was another victory for the educators.
According to reports, “The Tinderet MP assured that TSC has been allocated Ksh1 billion to promote teachers who had stagnated in one job group for a long period.”
The two committees of the National Assembly also deliberated on the necessity of bringing back the school feeding program, which was initiated thirty years prior by the former President Daniel Moi.
The Budget Appropriations Committee was asked by MP Melly to reevaluate the Ksh4.9 billion feeding program.
Former Chief Economic Advisor David Ndii of President William Ruto had earlier announced that the Ministry of Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) would now be in charge of the feeding program.
