TSC: Official Retirement Age for Teachers Set to Shift to 55.
The official teacher retirement age will rise to 55. Teachers, being state servants, will now have to adjust to a law that is scheduled to be submitted in Parliament, which aims to modify their obligatory retirement age.
In order to provide the younger generation chances, the Kenya Kwanza government is committed to making sure that senior public officers resign from their jobs.
In an effort to provide young people with more employment options in the public sector, the parliamentary discussion on reducing the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 55 is gathering steam. Before leaving the working at fifty-five, those who are getting close to that age participate in retirement readiness training.
In the meantime, anyone over fifty-five who have already received training will be informed of the upcoming changes prior to their retirement.
On August 3, 2023, the National Assembly’s Labor Committee offered a change to the Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill 2023 that would raise the retirement age to 55.
Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru is sponsoring a bill that, contrary to current law, would restrict performances to a maximum of six months. Legislators like Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga and Kangundo MP Fabian Muli are pushing for a greater reduction in the retirement age to better serve the needs of younger voters.
A sizable portion of state employees who will be retiring in the next five years would leave the workforce earlier than anticipated if the proposed adjustments are accepted, which might put further financial strain on the government’s pension commitments. In 2009, in response to rising pension expenditures, a proposal was made to raise the retirement age from 55 to 60.
Specifically, the 2016 audit found that a large percentage of national government workers were in the 51–60 age range. The Public Service Commission’s annual report states that 3,958 civil officials left various ministries, divisions, and agencies in the fiscal year 2021–2022.
The Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill 2023 delineates regulations for the designation of executives, specifying the necessary qualifications and proficiency standards for these positions.
If an executive appointment was made without fulfilling these requirements, the Public Service Commission would annul it. Furthermore, Aisha Jumwa, the then-public service commissioner of České Budějovice, issued an order in February 2023 prohibiting the continuation of duty to retired officers, citing legal rules about retirement age.
This instruction contained the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) decision to stop extending principals’ and retiring principals’ terms of service.
Jumwa called for the termination of current extensions and emphasized adherence to retirement age standards in order to support appropriate succession management in the public sector.
