TSC starts sending out show-cause notices to JSS interns.
Teachers Service Commission show-cause letters have begun to be sent to junior secondary school intern teachers who have been demonstrating around the nation against the terms of their job contracts.
On Thursday, the letters were first distributed to the intern teachers.
This comes after TSC wrote to regional directors of education last week to inquire about the quantity of student intern teachers who have been absent from class as a result of the protests.
“It is noted with a lot of concern that you breached the provisions of TSC Act Schedule Clause (b) in that you engaged in professional misconduct by being absent from duty,” the letter begins.
“In light of the aforementioned, the commission is considering ending your internship. Consequently, you are now required to provide justification for why the internship agreement with the commission should not be cancelled.”
Within 14 days, TSC requested that the interns produce a response on the subject.
“Failure to which the contemplated action will be taken against you without further reference to you,” warned the Commission.
Tuesday marked the start of the second week of protests as millions of students nationwide lack teachers for the upcoming school year.
According to TSC, starting in January 2025, it intends to hire up to 26,000 JSS intern teachers on permanent, pensionable terms.
The employer of teachers informed MPs that it would require Sh8.3 billion to ratify the permanent terms of 26,000 instructors.
Regarding TSC’s ability to verify all 46,000 JSS intern teachers by July 1, 2024, the Commission estimated that it would require about Sh30 billion.
The TSC has been urged to recall the letters by the Kenya National Union.
Collins Oyuu, Knut Secretary General, stated on Thursday that the union has long suspected that TSC would eventually send the instructors show cause letters in order to start disciplinary proceedings against them.
Many of the educators have been granted All show-cause notices that were sent to the intern teachers who were demonstrating should be recalled, according to Oyuu.
The CEO of Knut stated that the union “wants to protect the interns from being intimidated and disciplined out of the fact that they didn’t know exactly what it will lead to.”
According to Oyuu, in order to determine a plan for the teachers’ return to work, the union has requested a meeting with the legal affairs director of the commission, who signed the letters.
