TSC starts to send termination letters to JSS intern teachers.
Intern teachers at junior secondary schools who have been demonstrating for permanent work terms for the past few weeks have begun getting letters from their employer terminating them.
It has been reported to The Star that the interns received letters from the Teachers Service Commission on June 6 informing them that their employment had been terminated “on grounds of professional misconduct.”
“In view of the above, the Commission has decided to terminate your Internship engagement with effect from June 6, 2024, because you engaged in acts of professional misconduct in that you deserted duty with effect from May 13, 2024, to date while engaged as an Intern teacher,” the letter of termination stated in part.
The Teachers Service Commission has made it clear that it is not canceling every junior secondary school intern teacher’s contract, nevertheless.
TSC said that up to 46,000 instructors nationwide are under contract for internships.
TSC sent show-cause letters to the teachers who had absconded from their teaching duties on May 13.
“Total number who absented themselves from May 13, 2024, given show-cause letters to explain their whereabouts are 10,348,” said the Commission.
TSC reported that on May 22, it sent the interns show-cause letters for skipping class because they were participating in a protest.
Within 14 days, TSC requested a response from the interns; if they did not, the planned action would ultimately be implemented.
“Reference is made to the show cause letter 22 May 2024 in which you were accorded an opportunity to explain the reasons why your engagement as an intern should not be terminated on account of professional misconduct,” stated the TSC.
Just 9,606 instructors were able to reply to the show-cause letters within the allotted two weeks, according to TSC, out of 10,348 professors who received them.
“Number of teachers who did not report back, whereabouts not known and their contracts were terminated and replaced are 742,” claimed the TSC.
According to a Nairobi-based permanent teacher who requested anonymity, other instructors in the staff room have also been given access to the information.
“Two of our interns who were actively taking part in the protests have received the termination letters,” he continued.
