TSC Teachers Requirements for Graduate and Diploma Holders.
Teaching Qualifications for Diploma and Degree Holders. Teaching holds significant prominence in Kenya, with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) estimating a teacher population exceeding 300,000. The Kenyan Constitution established the TSC as an independent commission to oversee human resources in the education sector.
In Kenya, teachers are classified into three groups: Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), Primary Education Teaching, and Diploma and Degree in education, each with distinct responsibilities and required qualifications. This article focuses on secondary school teachers and their qualifications.
Qualifications for secondary school teaching, updated by TSC in 2024, vary based on different education diplomas and degrees, including specialized programs for teaching visually and hearing-impaired students.
For a Diploma in Education:
– Minimum KCSE grade of C+ and above
– C+ in two specialization subjects
– At least C plain in English
– C in Mathematics for science-based courses or D+ for non-science-based courses
For a Diploma in Education for the visually and hearing impaired:
– Minimum KCSE grade of C Plain and above
– At least C minus in English
– C in Mathematics for science-based courses or D for non-science-based courses
For a Bachelor of Education:
– Minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ and above, or its equivalent
– C+ in two subjects of specialization
For Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science:
– Minimum KCSE grade of C+ and above
– C+ in two subjects of specialization
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is tailored for individuals transitioning into teaching roles.
While some degree holders aspire to become secondary education teachers, meeting the KCSE mean grade requirement of C+ can be a challenge for those with grades below this threshold, as stipulated by the TSC.
