TSC Threatens to Fire Every Intern Teacher on Strike.
Now that classes have resumed for the second term, the instructors Service Commission (TSC) has pledged to fire any intern instructors who have neglected to report back to work.
In order to inform the next disciplinary action against individuals who have not reported to duty, TSC stated on Friday that it is working on attendance reports from all schools.
The director of TSC Legal Affairs, Mr. Cavin Anyuor, stated that attendance records will determine the basis for disciplinary action taken against those who fail to report for duty during his appearance before the National Assembly Education Committee.
He continued by saying that these records are being gathered by the heads of the schools and will be delivered to the TSC headquarters by Friday, May 17, 2024.
TSC made this decision a few days after intern instructors made a clear commitment to avoid going to school, despite their employer’s instructions to return to the classroom.
With the backing of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), the interns have also declared that they will be holding another demonstration beginning the following week.
According to Mr. Daniel Murithi, secretary-general of the Kenya Junior Secondary Teachers Association, the TSC’s plea for them to return to work won’t resolve their current issues until it is verified.
The significant dispute between JSS and TSC teachers occurs concurrently with the labor court’s April verdict declaring internship programs unlawful.
The reason for this is that equal work is not paid equal.
Nonetheless, the TSC is permitted by the court to keep hiring interns through August 1, 2024.
Regretfully, TSC has now said that it will only hear from the teaching interns in the event that their appeal is denied.
The scenario appears to be further complicated by a financial deficit, since TSC claims it does not have the Sh30 billion necessary to hire all of the intern teachers on a permanent basis.
Based on research findings, TSC will require Sh8.3 billion to accommodate 26,000 interns in January 2025, just for the first batch.
A portion of the about 60,000 intern instructors skipped classes on Monday when the schools resumed for the second semester, which led to the misunderstanding.
The teachers are asking for increased compensation as well as permanent, pensionable terms for their internship contracts.
Speaking on the same subject, Anyuor stated that TSC will act appropriately in accordance with stay orders indicating that it is unlawful to engage intern instructors.
