TSC to Recruit 26,000 Interns on a Permanent Terms.
There will be job security for Kenya’s intern teachers in primary and junior secondary schools (JSS) as 26 000 of them would be hired on a permanent and pensionable basis beginning in January 2025. KSh 8.3 billion will be spent on this change.
For the Financial Year 2024–2025, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been granted KSh 364.910 billion by the National Treasury, which will allow it to continue operating.
The TSC was originally approved for KSh 369.9 billion under the 2024 Budget Policy Statement; however, the tentative budget estimates for 2024–2025 indicate a minor reduction to KSh 364.910 billion.
This indicates a drop in development spending of KSh 33 million and recurrent spending of KSh 5.033 billion.
This funding announcement coincides with JSS intern teachers’ ongoing demonstrations, during which they are calling for permanent employment as a result of an Employment and Labour Relations Court decision (ELRC).
The court determined that their employment as interns, as opposed to permanent and pensionable positions, constituted a violation of their labor rights. As the second semester gets underway, the instructors have refused to go back into the classroom.
At the moment, intern teachers in JSS are paid KSh 20,000 in JSS and KSh 15,000 in primary schools for their one-year contracts.
TSC intends to allocate KSh 4.68 billion for the recruitment of an additional 20,000 interns in primary and JSS schools in order to overcome the teacher shortage.
TSC has also declared intentions to invest KSh 1 billion in teacher advancement. In keeping with the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG), 36,505 teachers were recently promoted to higher grades, and this figure is consistent with existing expenditures.
Teachers who had been in the same job group for years were given these promotions, which improved their morale and career prospects.
All things considered, the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector by resolving teacher shortages and better working conditions for educators is demonstrated by the budgeted allocations and planned recruitments.
