TSC updated New Disabilities Allowances for teachers with disabilities.
The TSC has updated its New Disabilities Allowances for teachers with disabilities, broken down by work category.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has released a revised compensation guide for teachers who live with disabilities.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has evaluated the kinds of disabilities that qualify for allowance payments to public sector employees, including teachers and TSC staff, according to a communication dated June 11, 2024, signed by TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia.
As to the letter, SRC examined the various categories of disability in a circular that was issued on March 7, 2024, with reference to SRC/ADM/11(190).
The disabilities that qualify for allowances include deafness, blindness, and low vision requiring magnifiers.
Teachers with low vision are eligible for allowances based on an ophthalmologist’s report indicating a Visual Acuity of 6/60 or below, which constitutes Severe Visual Impairment.
Other eligible disabilities include the use of wheelchairs, crutches, walking frames, and any walking aid that requires the use of both hands.
SRC has allocated a personal allowance of Ksh20,000 per month to public officers living with disabilities, including teachers.
This allowance is part of the monthly remuneration and has been effective since February 14, 2024.
Teachers wishing to apply for this allowance should follow the guidelines set out in the Remuneration Act of 2015.
