TSC Will Automatically Confirm 46,000 Intern Teachers.
Nancy Macharia, the Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), has revealed that the commission intends to automatically verify the 46,000 intern teachers.
These educators are currently employed under contracts, but after two years, their status will change to one of permanent employment with pension benefits.
TSC hired 46,000 intern instructors last year after extending their contract for an extra year in January. The commission attributed this to a lack of funding.
A total of 21,500 intern teachers were sent to JSS during the initial recruiting.
These educators have expressed dissatisfaction with the extended arrangement following their degrees, even if they are still trading their services for jobs at different schools.
The fact that teachers must accept meager stipends in lieu of pay satisfies them.
Dr. Nancy Macharia, who represents the commission’s dedication to resolving the teachers’ issues, has given these educators the assurance that they will be given top consideration when schools have openings.
Macharia claimed that there would be no need to post job openings because these teachers will be taken on automatically.
The commission’s most recent announcement seeks to give intern teachers a clear path forward, guaranteeing their career stability and a smooth transition to full-time, pensionable work by 2025.
TSC agreed to extend the teacher contracts in order to comply with its financial limits and to give the commission the time to complete any necessary administrative actions.
Teachers with secondary school degrees on contract receive Sh20,000 per month under the present internship program. Those holding an elementary school diploma are awarded Sh15,000.
But after the monthly mandated deductions, secondary school teachers are left with about Ksh. 17,000 while their counterparts in secondary schools receive Ksh. 13,000 in compensation.
Following the TSC’s renewal of the intern contract and its refusal to confirm these instructors, there has been a great deal of protest from both the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education instructors (KUPPET).
Akelo Misori, the secretary-general of KUPPET, was the first to voice concerns about the extended internship duration.
