TSC will hire 20,000 more intern teachers despite the court ruling.
The government has given TSC Sh4.68 billion to hire 20,000 more teachers on contract, raising the total number of teachers hired to 76,000.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) intends to deploy 18,000 recruits in secondary schools and 2,000 in primary schools by 2025 and 2026, respectively.
The coalition government’s manifesto committed to alleviate the teacher shortage, which currently stands at 116,000, by hiring 58,000 teachers per year for Sh25 billion, if funds are available.
Since 2019, the government has recruited instructors for one-year contracts under the “internship” program.
Teachers on contract, on the other hand, are requesting absorption into permanent and pensionable conditions in response to a court verdict in their favor.
The TSC got orders to keep the ruling in effect until August and is appealing it.
“The education sector will continue to address ongoing curriculum reforms with a focus on teacher capacity development, e-learning, innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and talent development,” states TSC’s report to the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Education and Research.
Teachers may be eligible for leave, home allowances, or commuting allowances based on their workstation and job grade.
Deployment
The TSC intends to employ 18,000 new teachers on contract in secondary schools and 2,000 in basic schools.
These figures are projected for 2025 and 2026. According to the TSC report, the education sector will continue to address current curriculum reforms, focusing on teacher capacity building, e-learning, innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and talent development.
Accordingly, the commission will continue to recruit additional instructors to ensure the successful implementation of the competency-based curriculum.
Specifically, the recruiting will aim to address the needs of both junior and senior schools, with a focus on new learning areas.
