Union now requests that CS Machogu put an end to UoN leadership disputes.
Academic staff at the University of Nairobi have requested Education CS Ezekiel Machogu to step in and put an end to the ongoing arguments within the school.
Vice Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama has been placed on mandatory leave twice in the last six months due to the disputes.
Amukowa Anangwe, the chairman of the University of Nairobi Council, stated that the decision to place Kiama on leave was made on April 19.
Professor Ayub Njoroge has been directed by the council to remain in his role as vice chancellor.
However, Kiama disregarded the order right away, declaring that he would not be leaving.
The beleaguered VC attended a meeting between managers of public universities and President William Ruto on Tuesday at the State House.
Richard Bosire, the chairman of the Universities Academic Staff Union UoN chapter, pleaded with Machogu to read the riot act to the quarreling parties.
“Unless Machogu gathers these individuals and reads the Riot Act, we will not be able to resolve this problem. He said, “We are eager to help him and we are asking him to take action.
“In his opinion, the government has exceptional capacity through its intelligence and security systems to really go deep and be able to establish the root cause of the crisis.”
According to Bosire, the disputes are harming UoN’s standing.
“In order for the university to focus on its key mandate, the government should take action that is appropriate and swift to stop wrangles,” he stated.
Bosire attributed the quarrels to a disregard for the existing university administration systems.
It is regrettable, according to Secretary Maloba Wekesa, that the university is exposing its dirty laundry in public.
“For crying out loud, you are all academics. You ought to be more aware,” he remarked.
Among Kenya’s, Africa’s, and the world’s top public universities is the University of Nairobi.
According to Wekesa, the UoN Council was not duly established and is currently headed by Anangwe.
He claimed that during the Uasu-UoN chapter’s three years in office, the university has had two chancellors, one vice-chancellor, and three councils.
“Whereas the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor have enjoyed their tenures, the council has been subject to political appointments,” Wekesa stated.
Litigation has arisen about the CS’s authority to reorganize university councils as a result of the council’s leadership changes.
Judge Jairus Ngaah of the High Court declared on March 16 that Education CS lacked the authority to reorganize any university council that had already been nominated and gazetted.
“The Judge noted potential consequences the university might encounter, but he chose not to rule in accordance with his observations. The existing university council is now illegitimate as a result of this, according to Wekesa.
The case is still pending in court.
According to Wekesa, the university should be at peace while carrying out its mission as a center for teaching and research.
“More drama is not what we need,” he declared.
