UoN student council wants meeting with Ruto.
President William Ruto should address the issues raised by the University of Nairobi Student Council.
The UoN students said in a statement on Friday that talks will focus on matters that affect the nation and were signed by Council President Rocha Madzao.
According to the students, immediate action is necessary to address the problems and guarantee Kenyans’ improved quality of life and sustained development.
“As the President stated he would talk about the problems and the path forward, we are requesting an urgent discussion or dialogue with him. The student leaders stated, “This can be done in person or online.
Ruto stated on Wednesday that he had heard the youth’s voice clearly conveyed during this past week’s large-scale protests.
He declared that he would not sign the Finance Bill, saying, “Accordingly, as I committed on Sunday, I propose an engagement with young people of our nation to listen to their issues and agree with them on their priority areas of concern.”
The students’ top priority is accountability for all the fatalities and injuries that were caused to young people who were peacefully protesting the contested Finance Bill, 2024.
They want the offenders held accountable.
Accountability and corruption are the next topics on the agenda.
They demand that Ruto’s administration enhance the organizations tasked with combating corruption by making sure they are well-funded, impartial, and free from political meddling, and audit the hiring procedures carried out by the Public Service Commission (PSC).
Additionally, the student representatives want the President to reduce Executive spending by carefully examining its budget to find places where savings can be achieved without jeopardizing critical operations.
Additionally, they have demanded that a precise framework be put in place to hold agencies responsible for their expenditures, guaranteeing frequent audits and open reporting.
The students also want the entire education sector to receive more funds so that their financing concerns may be investigated.
“Prioritise funding for teacher training, infrastructure development, and the provision of learning materials to improve the quality of education,” they stated.
“We urge this government to prioritise the rehabilitation of infrastructure in the various universities across the country,” they stated.
In an effort to further solidify and reinforce openness, the youth leaders also desire that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and the Ministry of Education be audited by the government.
The students further demand that the government use technology to improve public involvement, with a focus on youth, in order to guarantee that their voices are adequately heard during decision-making processes.
“This approach aims to utilise Digital Platforms and implement interactive digital platforms such as mobile apps, websites and social media channels dedicated to soliciting youth opinions on relevant issues,” said the pupils.
The student leaders also discussed the nation’s economic issues and provided advice on how to reduce Kenya’s debt load.
They demanded that the National Treasury and the Ministry of Finance do research on the main causes of Kenya’s mounting debt.
They claimed that this covers, among other things, concerns with domestic governance, budgetary policies, and external economic forces.
To improve public trust, they recommended that information about public debts, including how they were obtained, used, and when they are due, be made public.
