Updates on confirmation for 46,000 JSS Interns as TSC receives the following directives
On Wednesday, the Committee on Budget and Appropriations directed the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to grant permanent and pensionable terms to all junior secondary school teachers who had been employed under an internship program.
The committee chairperson, Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, said that the project has sufficient funding in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, as provided by the government.
“I can guarantee this house that enough resources are available to confirm the JSS interns into permanent and pensionable terms,” Ndindi Nyoro said after the meeting.
In addition, Nyoro gave TSC the order to hire everyone of the 46,000 interns who have been participating in the program in his capacity as the chairperson of the influential committee.
Furthermore, as stated by the legislator, the TSC would have to appoint the interns following the budget’s approval rather than in January 2025 as was first suggested.
As the TSC appropriates this money, Ndindi Nyoro said, “From this floor of this house, I want to request that you please do not wait until January 2025 to confirm the interns. Please hasten their confirmation as soon as the budget is passed.”
He added that despite earning meager pay, the instructors had served the country.
After agreeing to stop their three-week strike and signing a return-to-work agreement on Saturday, June 1, the junior secondary school intern teachers issued the parliamentary directions.
The instructors were scheduled to return to work on Monday, June 3, according to the deal that was signed on Madaraka Day.
Of particular note, TSC withdrew all show-cause notices that had been sent to teachers as a result of their involvement in the strike.
Furthermore, as a result of their participation in the strikes, TSC promised to reinstate teachers who had been deregistered and had their pay withheld.
Unexpectedly, though, a few of the JSS instructors refused to follow the signed return to work formula, claiming that they would only retool once they were given permanent jobs with pensions.
